I got to know Lalaina Rackson when she wrote an article citing my quote ’to live a life true to ourselves, we need a strong mind and a breakable heart’.
After following her account on Medium, I was impressed that this creator from Paris posted a new piece of content almost every day on the site.
She might be young and still in the journey of building something magnificent, but her passion and beliefs in art is infectious.
I wish I have so much self-belief when I was 24.
Be yourself, period
‘Be yourself’ is a phrase that came up again and again throughout our conversation in all areas we touched on, be it the source of inspiration or advise for young creators.
Even though Lalaina emphasized a lot on being herself in creating artwork and articles, she sounded so sincere that it was as though there is no other way but to be herself.
Being herself is not an ego play, it simply makes sense. It is the only security that truly matters because it makes sure she pulls through during the toughest times.
You are the creative industry
Lalaina breathes and lives the words ‘creativity’.
She taught herself how to dance at 8, she taught herself portrait sketching, and when she started to write, it came naturally to her to start her own L’artiste Mag to showcase all her creations under one brand.
To her, creativity happens without any rewards or expectation attached to it.
Her message to young people who want to work in the creative industry is, do not choose this path because of fame and fortunes, choose the creative industry because it is you.
Depression, you have to hear it from her
Lalaina wrote an honest and heart-warming article about depression that made me pause and reflect, have I been kind to people in my life who needed the space to be not okay?
“And I think that the most important thing that you have to remember is that it’s ok not to be ok. Don’t beat yourself up even more for not being ok. There’s no easy quick fix. You’ll just have to ride the waves.”
Her words are like a warm blanket that protect any hurting heart from hurting more.
She gave people a space to be not okay through words, to know that we are not alone and we will get better.
Creativity is a way of life
Lalaina truly believes that we should follow the things that make our soul come alive because those things are going to make us more of who we really are.
It doesn’t matter whether one becomes an artist, writer, doctor, or accountant, the world will be a better place if we all create goodness doing what we love.
“To be creative means to be in love with life. You can be creative only if you love life enough that you want to enhance its beauty, you want to bring a little more music to it, a little more poetry to it, a little more dance to it.”
